Madison

Another shot rang out, causing Madison to look to Easter. “What do I do here?”

“You’re doing fine,” Easter replied, lizard tongue slipping out to taste the wind. “When the fighting starts, just make sure you’re steering out of their lines of fire, and shooting at them whenever possible.”

She gulped. One thing her dad had always known about her that they had managed to keep from the rest of the family was her fear of water. As long as she kept the ship from sinking, she would be fine. Still, being surrounded by all that water and its seemingly endless depths didn’t fill her with comfort.

The next shot that came hit too close for comfort, so she took the wheel and started to break right, giving her brother room to navigate. She thought of calling out orders, but really had no idea what she was doing. A large woman with a red bandana and hook in place of one hand was marching up and down the deck barking out orders anyway, and they seemed to be getting the job done.

One pirate ship had turned at an angle, and a warning shout came from Madison’s crew. She started turning the wheel, then realized she was already at a good shooting angle, so opened fire. At the same time, bursts of red and orange showed from the other ship, black smoke rising. Balls and chains ripped into Madison’s ship, and her shots hit the enemy.

“Reload!” a shout came from below, but Madison had no intention of keeping the ship in place. She went full sail and pushed on, firing only once again as she moved out of the enemy’s line of fire. One of those last shots took out the enemy’s mast, and her crew cheered as one.

More enemy ships were moving into position, though, and two were trying to blockade their advance. Without a doubt, she was going to have to fight.

“All right, ladies and gents,” she shouted, “what’s the best move here?”

“Cap’n?” the lead lady asked.

“I want to push through those two there to reach that square as quickly as possible, while arriving with my ally ships intact. What’s the best way to do that?”

“Charge ‘em!” one of the other pirates shouted.

The big lady shrugged. “Could work. Another plan would be to slingshot ourselves around.”

“What?” Madison shook her head, laughing. “That would never work. The physics alone—”

“You’re talking in your world, Cap’n,” the lady interrupted. “Here… it’ll work.”

Madison arched an eyebrow, unsure.

She saw a pirate manage to board Lucas’s ship and was just starting to worry, when she saw him swing his sword and send the man overboard to pixelate away before hitting the water. He was probably glad he had an upgraded sword in that moment, and since his screen had popped up, she assumed he had leveled up.

Speaking of leveling up, she thought, she still hadn’t used her last skill point from reaching level four. As she turned the boat again, she pulled up her screen and gave it some thought.
